Xiaomi 18 Ultra cancelled with three 200MP cameras, here’s why

A leak in August claimed that Xiaomi won’t release the Xiaomi 18 Ultra this year. Now, a reliable leaker has added more weight to the previous speculation. The leaker also unveiled some of the key specifications of the cancelled Xiaomi 18 Ultra.

Xiaomi 18 Ultra was packed with flagship features

According to Digital Chat Station (DCS), the Xiaomi 18 Ultra would have featured a flat Super Pixel LTPO display with ultra-narrow bezels measuring around 1mm. The phone was also expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, reportedly built on a 2nm process, making it one of the most powerful chipsets Xiaomi could have used.

The camera setup would have been the biggest highlight. Xiaomi reportedly planned to use three 200MP sensors, including a 1/1.12-inch LOFIC main camera, a 1/1.28-inch LOFIC periscope telephoto camera with continuous optical zoom, and a 1/1.56-inch ultra-wide camera. The setup would also have included a multispectral lens and support for a magnetic external lens. Other features were said to include a 0916 motor and symmetrical dual speakers.

The base variant was reportedly planned with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. It would have carried a price tag of 9,999 yuan, which is roughly $1,490.

Why the Xiaomi 18 Ultra was reportedly cancelled

The high price could be the main reason behind the cancellation. Xiaomi reportedly believed that a phone costing this much would not sell in sufficient numbers, leading the company to scrap the project. Earlier reports also pointed to rising memory prices as another possible factor.

However, the Ultra branding may not be gone for good. Reports suggest Xiaomi could bring back the Ultra model with the Xiaomi 19 Ultra, potentially arriving in late 2027 or early 2028.

It is a shame that we may never see the Xiaomi 18 Ultra, especially with those three 200MP cameras. The next-generation Ultra could be even more powerful, though. What do you think Xiaomi should call it, 19 Ultra or 20 Ultra? Let us know in the comments.
