Qualcomm next flagship SoC to support the AV1 video codec. The AV1 video codec was designed to boost the bandwidth efficiency of high-quality video and has been used before by YouTube and Netflix.
But Qualcomm’s chips do not provide native support for decoding AV1 video as does Samsung’s Exynos flagship SoCs in 2021-2022. The good news is that Qualcomm will soon catch up and introduce AV1 decoding within the top-of-the line chipset in 2023. The source claims that the SM8550 chip is the first to implement the technology.
